As avid film enthusiasts flock to theatres to catch the prequel to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, titled ‘Wonka’, we delve into a compelling theory that could permanently alter your perception of this beloved classic.

Roald Dahl’s timeless children’s novel hit shelves in 1964, captivating numerous generations with its imaginative storytelling and vibrant portrayal of Wonka’s factory. The subsequent film adaptations hold cherished nostalgic value for many, and this latest installment seems poised to be another irresistible delight.

While the tale does have its share of hair-raising moments—the haunting chocolate river boat ride scene from the 1971 musical adaptation lingers—the world of Wonka is generally perceived as charmingly sweet.

However, a rather unsettling fan theory presents a starkly different portrayal of the peculiar chocolatier. The argument, though admittedly compelling, veers away from the traditional view. It all stems from Wonka’s decision to conceal golden tickets within chocolate bars, granting entry to his highly classified factory for five fortunate children.

While the notion behind Wonka’s golden ticket initiative has generally been seen as an effort to pass on his passion for all things chocolate to the younger generation, some speculate a more ominous motive. Indeed, a prevalent fan theory suggests that Wonka might have been akin to a ‘Saw-like’ serial killer, intending harm to his youthful guests.

This theory, detailed on whatculture.com, asserts: “Driven by fury at his workers’ deceit and his rivals’ incessant espionage, and spiralling into madness due to years of self-imposed isolation, Willy Wonka opted to exact vengeance in a manner reminiscent of an Angry Deity, targeting select children in a diabolically intricate scheme. He orchestrated all the misfortunes that befell the children within the factory, hence his apparent indifference towards their fates, crafting a twisted morality tale akin to that of Saw.”

Indeed, he appears unfazed when children are sucked up pipes, transformed into fudge, inflated into colossal blueberries, or sent hurtling towards their demise in incinerators. Why was Charlie exempt? It’s believed that Wonka handpicked him as the successor to his malevolent legacy, aiming to acquaint him with the sinister realities of the world.

The ‘proof’

The website raises a valid argument in support of the peculiar theory. “How else could the Oompa-Loompas have had meticulously rehearsed song and dance routines, even knowing the names of the victims in advance? It seems meticulously planned.” It’s rather hard to dispute that, to be honest.

You can watch Wonka at cinemas across the country starting from the 8th of December, 2023.
