The incident occurred on the eastbound lane of the motorway, situated between Junction 17 (Chippenham) and Junction 18 (Bath) around 09:10 am on Friday.

A collision ensued involving a heavy goods vehicle and four cars.

Tragically, two women who were travelling in one of the vehicles lost their lives at the scene, as reported by Wiltshire Police.

Emergency personnel conducted recovery and investigative operations, resulting in the closure of the M4 between Junction 18 on the eastbound side and Junction 17 on the westbound side.

Acting Inspector Will Ayres stated: “Given the severity of the collision and the vehicles involved, the recovery and investigation efforts at the scene are anticipated to take a considerable amount of time. Consequently, the eastbound section of the motorway will remain closed well into this evening (Friday).

“We have, however, opened one lane on the westbound carriageway. It’s worth noting that there are still several emergency service vehicles occupying that carriageway. Once these are removed, we will completely reopen this side of the motorway.”
