Allegedly, the iconic moment of Del Boy tumbling through the bar in the TV show ‘Only Fools and Horses’ was not intended to happen the way it did.

This cherished scene from the 1989 episode ‘Yuppy Love’ is often hailed as one of the funniest in British sitcom history. However, recent revelations suggest that Roger Lloyd Pack’s character, Trigger, was not initially slated to be part of that particular scene.

In a newly discovered rehearsal script by writer John Sullivan, which is now up for sale at Bristol & Bath Auctioneers, it’s revealed that the scene would have taken a different turn. According to valuer Andy Stowe, the script, comprising just a single page, indicates a variation in the sequence.

“There’s a rumour circulating that originally, Roger Lloyd Pack wasn’t included in the scene,” Andy mentioned.

“But he arrived that day, and writer John Sullivan incorporated him into that scene. A substantial part of the humour stems from Trigger’s response, his observations.”

However, Andy asserts that David’s portrayal as Del Boy raises it to a particularly remarkable level. He remarked, “What you witness on screen is sheer acting skill and comic timing, and that’s where the enchantment lies.”

Actor John Challis, known for his role as Boycie, appears to have corroborated the claim. He informed The Telegraph, saying, “Roger happened to be at the BBC at that moment, and he had a break. They found Trigger’s blue suit and put him in this scene, which was almost spontaneous.

“When I watched it, I found it utterly brilliant. The timing and Roger’s portrayal – him searching for Del Boy, while Del Boy had already risen. But I always jest that it wasn’t very amusing because I wasn’t involved.”

Only Fools was voted the nation’s favourite sitcom

Roger personally chose the scene as his standout moment from the series. While speaking at an Only Fools convention to an interviewer from the Only Fools Appreciation Society, he remarked, “I have numerous highlights, but undoubtedly, the scene of falling through the bar was incredibly special.

“We dedicated considerable time to perfecting it, and it’s become quite a distinct episode, highly renowned and even garnered awards, so undoubtedly that stands out. Yet, there are numerous delightful moments throughout.”
