TV personality Dom Joly faced a terrifying ordeal during his research for a book on monsters in the Congo. He recounted being attacked by locals wielding a machete, an incident that left him fearing for his life.

The 56-year-old, known for his appearance on “I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here” in 2010, shared details about his solo trip to the northern part of the Congo in search of a mythical creature. Speaking ahead of his upcoming tour titled “Dom Joly: The Conspiracy Tour 2024,” he described the harrowing experience, stating, “One of my scariest moments was when I went to the Congo for a book I wrote about monsters.”

Joly recalled his attempt to reach Lake Tele, a location integral to his investigation, which involved a flight followed by a three-day canoe trip. He explained, “I was ‘hunting’ monsters, and I tried to get to a lake in northern Congo, called Lake Tele. I had to fly there and take a canoe trip for three days to get to a village where they had to then get me access to this lake.”

In an interview with the Daily Star, he recounted the tense situation that unfolded after negotiating for access to the area. He described how the locals, after granting permission, delayed his progress by insisting on a party. Joly expressed frustration at the turn of events, saying, “I spent all day negotiating this access and then they said yes, and I said, ‘Great. Can we crack on?’ And they said, ‘No, we have to have a party’.” He further explained how excessive alcohol consumption led to violent behavior among the attendees, making the situation extremely distressing.

TV star Dom Joly recalls moment he was attacked with a machete in the Congo

Dom found himself in a daunting situation as the person meant to accompany him on the following day unexpectedly attacked him with a machete and ended up restrained to a tree. Normally, in a tale like this, one might expect the protagonist to venture forth alone. However, feeling out of his depth, Dom made a different choice. When everyone else was unconscious, he decided to leave. Being on his own, without the support of a TV crew or anyone else, was solely for the purpose of his book.

Dom’s upcoming tour, based on his latest book ‘The Conspiracy Tourist’, is scheduled to commence in February, running until the 28th of March. In March 2021, viewers were astonished when Dom Joly secured a £50,000 victory on Beat The Chasers after the team stumbled over a question about Phil Mitchell.

The comedian had previously appeared on The Chase in 2012, facing off against Shaun Wallace, also known as the Dark Destroyer. Despite initially winning £10,000 in the cash builder round, Dom opted for the higher offer of £89,000, only to crash out of the competition.

On his second attempt, Dom managed to answer two out of five questions correctly, once more electing to go for the highest offer, this time £50,000, against five Chasers. While both the Beast and the Vixen seemed close to answering the question, the Beast could only recall Steve McFadden’s last name, leaving them struggling for the remainder of their time in the spotlight.

Dom was taken aback by his £50,000 win for charity, with 30 seconds still remaining on the clock. Fans took to Twitter in a frenzy, expressing their shock and delight at the Chasers being confounded by a question about Phil Mitchell on #BeatTheChasers.
