A Labour councillor has tendered her resignation from the party in light of comments made by Sir Keir Starmer regarding the Israel-Gaza conflict.

Jessie Hoskin, who represented the Cainscross ward on Stroud District Council, expressed her dissatisfaction on Facebook with Starmer’s statements, which she interpreted as “endorsement of war crimes against Palestinian people”.

During a recent interview on LBC, Mr. Starmer remarked that “Israel has the right” to control the supply of power and water to the Gaza Strip.

Hoskin asserted, “Any targeting of civilian lives must be unequivocally condemned.” She went on to emphasise that the two million Palestinians in Gaza, who bore no responsibility for the actions of Hamas, should not face collective punishment.

“We are witnessing appalling acts, and he has not issued an apology since,” she remarked.

Having been a member of the Labour Party for eight years and a councillor for two, Hoskin made it clear that she no longer believed the party aligned with principles of human dignity, equality, and a secure world for all.

She advocated for solutions that safeguard both Palestinian and Israeli lives, uphold international law, and strive towards a future where everyone is secure.

While Hoskin intends to continue serving as a councillor for Cainscross, she will do so as an independent.

The South West regional office of the Labour Party has been approached for comment.
