Steve Halliwell, the actor known for portraying Zak Dingle on ITV’s Emmerdale, passes away at the age of 77

Regrettably, Emmerdale actor Steve Halliwell, renowned for portraying Zak Dingle on the popular ITV soap, passed away on Friday at the age of 77.

Having been an integral part of the beloved Dingle family on the show for 29 years, he was cherished by many. His family paid a heartfelt tribute, acknowledging him as the most incredible father and grandfather, for whom family held paramount importance.

In their statement, the family expressed gratitude to the medical teams at St James’s Hospital in Leeds and Wheatfield Hospice, acknowledging their compassion and care during his final days.

“He sought not sadness but rather to revel in a life richly experienced,” the statement conveyed.

Beyond his role in Emmerdale, he graced the screens in Cracker, Heartbeat, and Coronation Street. However, his most notable portrayal was as Zak Dingle, the revered head of the Dingle clan and the father figure to Cain, Belle, and Sam Dingle.

Steve had his family ‘laughing until the end’

In 2003, he briefly stepped away from Emmerdale due to personal reasons, disclosing later that he had undergone a period of treatment at an alcohol rehabilitation centre. Then, in September 2018, he was compelled to temporarily withdraw from his role on the soap opera after undergoing heart surgery.
