The demise of the acclaimed singer was disclosed by Zizi Kodwa, the Minister of Sports, Arts, and Culture in the country.

Bulelwa Mkutukana, known by her real name, gained prominence in 2011 through her album ‘Loliwe’.

Her 2013 release, ‘Phendula’, featured three singles that topped the charts, and she followed this success with her third album, ‘Country Girl’, in 2015.

Zahara proceeded to release her fourth album, Mgodi, in 2017, which became her highest-selling record. Her final album, Nwaba Yam, in 2021, secured the top spot on iTunes.

In 2021, the singer, who appeared as a guest judge on Idols South Africa, showcased her talent by performing in both her native language Xhosa and English.

Throughout her career, she garnered numerous awards, clinching eight South African Music Awards in 2012 alone, notably winning Best Female Artist and Album of the Year.

While her family has not yet issued an official statement, they recently provided an update on her health.

The update stated: ‘Zahara has been admitted to hospital for a week due to physical pains. The medical team is working diligently, and we await further updates.’

In an appeal to halt the spread of misinformation online, the family added: ‘We kindly request privacy regarding this matter and your continued prayers for Zahara’s swift recovery.’

‘We have faith that she will soon return to her passion – touching lives through her profound musical talent.’

Offering condolences, Kodwa expressed: ‘I am deeply saddened by the passing of @ZaharaSA. My heartfelt sympathies to the Mkutukana family and the South African music community. The government has been supporting the family during this time.

‘Zahara and her guitar have left an indelible mark on South African music.
