His family released a statement on Saturday morning, announcing his passing: “It is with profound sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Sir Bobby in the early hours of Saturday morning. He was surrounded by his loved ones. The family wishes to express gratitude to all those who contributed to his care and to the countless individuals who have shown him love and support. We kindly request that the family’s privacy be respected during this time.”

In tribute to Sir Bobby, Manchester United players will don black armbands and observe a minute’s silence on Saturday evening before their match against Sheffield United. The Manchester United icon secured the 1968 European Cup and clinched three first division titles with the club.

Charlton played a pivotal role in England’s victorious 1966 World Cup team and devoted 17 years to Manchester United, leading them to become the first English club to claim the European Cup in 1968.

Sir Geoff Hurst, now the sole survivor from the 1966 World Cup-winning team, paid homage, stating that Charlton was “undoubtedly one of the greatest”. He remarked, “Today brings very sad news; one of the true greats, Sir Bobby Charlton, has left us. He will forever remain in our memories, and not just in football. A wonderful colleague and friend, he will be greatly missed by the entire nation, extending far beyond the realm of sport. Our deepest condolences go out to his family and friends, from Geoff and Judith.”

England also honoured the Manchester United legend and 1966 World Cup hero: “It is with a heavy heart that we have learned of the passing of Sir Bobby Charlton. An integral part of our 1966 FIFA World Cup winning campaign, Sir Bobby won 106 caps and scored 49 times for the #ThreeLions. A true legend of our game. We will never forget you, Sir Bobby.”

Manchester United paid a poignant tribute to Sir Bobby Charlton in a statement released on Saturday. The statement conveyed, “Manchester United is in mourning following the passing of Sir Bobby Charlton, a towering figure and cherished player in the annals of our club’s history.

“Sir Bobby’s impact resonated with millions, not confined merely to Manchester or the United Kingdom, but wherever the beautiful game is embraced around the globe.

“He earned as much reverence for his fair play and unwavering principles as he did for his exceptional prowess on the football pitch; Sir Bobby will forever be enshrined as a titan of the sport.

“As a product of our esteemed youth Academy, Sir Bobby graced the field for 758 matches and netted an impressive 249 goals during his illustrious 17-year tenure as a Manchester United player, securing the European Cup, three league titles, and the FA Cup. On the international stage, he earned 106 caps, netting 49 goals, and clinched the 1966 World Cup.

“Post his playing days, he continued to serve the club with unwavering distinction as a director for an astonishing 39 years. His unrivalled legacy of accomplishments, character, and devoted service will forever be etched in the annals of Manchester United and English football. His influence will live on through the transformative efforts of the Sir Bobby Charlton Foundation.

“The club extends its deepest sympathies to his devoted wife, Lady Norma, his cherished daughters, grandchildren, and all who held him dear.”

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak also expressed his condolences, stating, “Very saddened to learn of the passing of Sir Bobby Charlton. He occupies a revered place in the annals of the sport as one of its finest players and was dearly cherished.”

Fans will have the opportunity to express their condolences for Sir Bobby at Old Trafford’s International Suite starting at 10 am this Sunday.

Gary Neville, the former United captain, shared his sentiments about Sir Bobby Charlton, saying, “I am deeply saddened by the news of Sir Bobby Charlton’s passing. He was the greatest English football player and Manchester United’s most exceptional ambassador. A champion both on and off the pitch, he was a Busby Babe who paved the way for all who followed at United. Rest In Peace, Sir Bobby.”

Former England striker Gary Lineker paid his respects to Sir Bobby Charlton, describing him as “England’s greatest ever player.” He conveyed his condolences online, saying, “I am profoundly saddened to learn of the passing of Sir Bobby Charlton. He was a truly remarkable footballer and a genuinely kind-hearted man. A World Cup champion, a Manchester United legend, and, in my view, England’s greatest ever player. While he may no longer be with us, his footballing legacy is immortal. Rest in peace, Sir Bobby.”

During his tenure at United, Charlton participated in 758 matches and scored 249 goals. He also secured three league titles, a European Cup, and an FA Cup.

Upon hearing the news of his passing, the Premier League expressed its deep sorrow, stating, “The Premier League is profoundly saddened by the loss of Sir Bobby Charlton, one of the greatest players in English football history. Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with Sir Bobby’s family, friends, and everyone associated with Manchester United.”
