Renowned British actress Shirley Anne Field, celebrated for her roles in iconic films like Peeping Tom, Alfie, and The Damned, has passed away at the age of 87.
Her family shared the news online, stating, “It is with profound sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Shirley Anne Field on Sunday 10th December 2023, surrounded by her loved ones.”
They added, “Shirley Anne will be deeply missed, remembered for her indomitable spirit, and a remarkable legacy spanning over five decades in theatre and cinema.”
Field’s debut on the silver screen was in Muriel Box’s Simon and Laura in 1955. However, it was her notable role in 1959’s Horrors of the Black Museum that propelled her into recognition in British cinema.
She starred opposite Laurence Olivier in the Oscar-nominated film The Entertainer in 1960. Subsequently, she appeared in notable productions such as Saturday Night and Sunday Morning, The War Lover, Beat Girl, and Joseph Losey’s The Damned.
Dedicated to her craft, Field cherished her role in the James Hill-directed film Lunch Hour in 1962, describing it to BBC Radio 4 as “the most enjoyable film I’d ever done.”
Despite receiving minimal payment, she believed the movie conveyed an essential message. During an interview with the New York Times, she remarked, “We all felt that it had something important to say about the rootlessness and confusion facing young people in England today.”
Furthermore, she starred alongside Michael Caine in the British classic Alfie in 1966 before transitioning to television roles in subsequent years. Later in her career, she graced the screen in movies like My Beautiful Laundrette, Getting It Right, and Shag.
