Shane MacGowan, famed singer of The Pogues, has passed away at the age of 65, mere days after celebrating a poignant five-year milestone with his wife, marked through a series of affectionate snapshots on social media.

Born on Christmas Day in 1957, MacGowan is primarily remembered for The Pogues’ timeless seasonal hit “Fairytale Of New York,” featuring Kirsty MacColl.

Victoria Mary Clarke, his wife, conveyed the heartbreaking news on Instagram through a poignant post confirming his demise.

Accompanying a picture of MacGowan, she wrote: “Finding the words is difficult, so I’ll simply say it. Shane, who remains the beacon guiding my path, the embodiment of my aspirations, the love of my life, a beautiful soul, an angel, the sun, the moon, the alpha and omega of all that I cherish, has departed to join Jesus, Mary, and his dear mother Therese.

“I am immeasurably grateful to have crossed paths with him, to have cherished him, and to have been unconditionally and eternally loved by him. Our journey was filled with years brimming with life, love, happiness, adventures, and laughter.”

The depth of sorrow I’m experiencing is indescribable, coupled with an ache for just one more radiant smile that illuminated my world.

I express profound gratitude, repeated fourfold, for your existence in this world. Your presence brought such brightness, and your heart, soul, and music bestowed immense joy upon countless souls.

Your memory will forever reside in my heart. May you continue to revel in the rain-soaked garden you cherished so dearly. To me, you were everything.

MacGowan leaves behind his wife, Clarke, whom he wed in 2018, decades after their initial encounter when the singer was 24 and she was 16.
