Piers Morgan strongly criticized the recent New Year Honours list, describing it as ‘ridiculously outrageous.’

The outspoken TV personality accused the process of being marred by ‘cronyism,’ singling out former Conservative Prime Minister Liz Truss for swiftly submitting nominations after just 49 days in office. Truss granted new peerages to a Tory supporter, her former deputy chief of staff, and a key figure in the Brexit movement.

Using X, previously referred to as Twitter, Piers vehemently condemned Truss and her farewell honours, stating: “The Liz Truss honours list… what an absurd display.

“Britain’s most disastrous Prime Minister, whose calamitous 44-day leadership wreaked havoc on the country’s economy, now gets to ‘honour’ her allies with accolades and titles. Utterly nonsensical.”

Foreign Secretary Liz Truss nominated Conservative donor Jon Moynihan and former Vote Leave chief Matthew Elliott for seats in the House of Lords. Ruth Porter, a former senior aide to Truss, was also appointed as a peer.

After the announcement, several individuals on social media teased Piers Morgan upon learning that Lionesses goalkeeper Mary Earps had received an MBE. One commentator wrote, “Wonder how @piersmorgan and @Joey7Barton are feeling knowing that Mary Earps has been awarded an MBE this morning. #meltdownincoming.” Another quipped, “Oh God, bet Piers Morgan is going to be upset about Mary Earps getting an MBE.”

Mary Earps, the acclaimed 30-year-old goalkeeper, and her Lionesses teammate Lauren Hemp were both honoured for their contributions to football following their second-place finish to Spain in the women’s World Cup. Earps rounded off the year triumphantly by also being named the 2023 BBC Sports Personality of the Year.

While many have celebrated Earps’ remarkable achievements and praised her for inspiring young girls to engage in football, Piers Morgan, who does not hold an MBE, has been dismissive of her impressive accomplishments.

The former presenter of Good Morning Britain, who isn’t known for professional sports, spoke out against the British public’s choice to name Earps this year’s Sports Personality of the Year just after the results were announced. During his TalkTV show, Morgan remarked, “Mary Earps comes across as a genuinely nice person with a lot of character and is an outstanding women’s goalkeeper, representing England at the peak of her career. However, this year hasn’t been the pinnacle for her or the Lionesses.”

Morgan proceeded to criticize the Lionesses for their defeat in the World Cup final and their failure to qualify for the upcoming Olympics in France. He mentioned having similar criticisms when the men’s England team won the Team of the Year prize at SPOTY despite losing in the Euros final in 2021.

Despite Morgan’s reservations about her worthiness as SPOTY winner, Earps has had an exceptional year both on and off the football field. The star goalkeeper for Manchester United made a crucial penalty save in England Women’s World Cup final against Spain and also received the Golden Glove award.

Not only did Earps achieve the same accolade in the Women’s Super League, but she also secured FIFA’s The Best Women’s Goalkeeper award. She claimed two titles with England, lifting the Women’s Finalissima and Arnold Clark Cup. Additionally, the talented athlete saw Nike selling replicas of her England shirt following a campaign by frustrated fans who were displeased with the brand’s earlier decision not to offer a goalkeeper jersey with Earps’ name on it.
