Pop sensation Olly Alexander, the frontman of Years and Years and a Bafta-nominated actor, has been unveiled as the United Kingdom’s representative for the 2024 Eurovision Song Contest in Malmo, Sweden. This announcement took place during the finale of Strictly Come Dancing last Saturday.

In a moment during the show, Alexander emerged through a golden doorframe to share some details about the voting process in the dance competition. Addressing the 33-year-old artist from Harrogate, North Yorkshire, Claudia Winkleman asked for a drum roll before revealing the news.

“I have some news, Claudia,” Alexander began as the drums commenced. “I am thrilled to exclusively announce that I will be representing the UK at the Eurovision Song Contest.”

With a beaming smile, he continued, “I’m already planning it out, aiming for a spectacular performance. I adore Eurovision immensely and am incredibly excited. It’s going to be a fantastic experience!” Alexander concluded by enthusiastically shouting “Sweden” alongside Winkleman.

Alexander shared his excitement after the announcement, saying, “Ever since I was a little kid, I’ve been a huge fan of Eurovision. It’s a dream come true to finally participate next year.”

Recollecting his childhood memories, he reflected, “As a young boy, I eagerly anticipated this amazing event filled with diverse music, theatrical acts, deep emotions, and humour. Being part of this legacy for the UK in a proudly vibrant way is an immense honour!”

Expressing his anticipation for his music journey, he added, “This has been a long-time dream, and I feel it’s the perfect moment to launch my music under my own name. I’m determined to give my all and deliver an unforgettable performance for everyone!”

Although the song he’ll perform at the 68th Eurovision Song Contest in May hasn’t been revealed, the BBC confirmed it’s a collaboration between Alexander and Danny L Harle, known for hits with Dua Lipa, Chic, and Charli XCX.

With Loreen’s victory in this year’s contest, next year’s competition moves to Sweden, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of Abba’s 1974 triumph with Waterloo.

Mae Muller represented the UK this year, earning 24 points for her track “I Wrote A Song” performed at Liverpool’s M&S Bank Arena.

The competition kicked off with a pre-recorded video featuring last year’s winners from Ukraine – Kalush Orchestra – and a surprise appearance by Britain’s Princess of Wales playing the piano.

Over the last decade, pop sensation Alexander has secured five top 10 UK singles and two number one albums with Years and Years. He’s also been part of TV shows like the final series of the teen drama Skins and Channel 4’s acclaimed “It’s A Sin,” earning a Bafta nomination for his role as Ritchie Tozer.

Mark your calendars! The Eurovision semi-finals are set for 7 and 9 May, followed by the grand final on 11 May 2024.
