German documentary filmmaker Jens Meurer spent time in Cromer, Norfolk, in 2019, shadowing locals as they prepared for the town’s annual variety show. Introduced to this tradition over a decade ago by his in-laws, Meurer believes that his film, titled “Seaside Special,” captures a particular essence of British culture that he holds dear.

Having premiered in 2022, the documentary will be screened in UK cinemas starting from Friday, 10th November. “Seaside Special” offers viewers a unique perspective, delving into the lives of both performers and residents in Cromer over the span of a year. It provides a behind-the-scenes look at the challenges and triumphs of a professional life on stage.

Director Jens Meurer was inspired to make the film after watching the show with his family more than 10 years ago

Mr. Meurer expressed that the film serves as a “homage” to the show he fell in love with a decade ago.

He remarked, “My aspiration to capture this world on camera finally materialized in 2019 – the year when Brexit reached its climax, and just before the pandemic took hold.”

Come December, the film will be showcased in a grand screening at The Pavilion Theatre in Cromer – the very locale that inspired it.

Sean Garrett, the general manager of Cromer Pier, remarked, “The film will forever hold a special place in our hearts, as it encapsulates a moment in time, centred around our Cromer Pier Summer and Christmas shows.”
