Kate Garraway chose to spend Christmas Day by her husband Derek Draper’s side.

The Good Morning Britain presenter reportedly feels ‘heartbroken’ as she remains with her seriously ill husband, Derek, during the holiday period. She took an indefinite leave of absence from both the ITV show and Smooth Radio due to his deteriorating condition, as reported by the Birmingham Mail.

According to a source, “It’s been a devastating time for Kate and, of course, for poor Derek. Unfortunately, his condition hasn’t shown much change. The children are aware of what’s happening and have been spending as much time as possible by their dad’s bedside. The entire family is coming together, trying their best to support each other during this challenging time. The impact during Christmas is particularly hard-hitting.”

Dr. Gareth Nye, a physiology lecturer at Chester Medical School, has shed light on the severity of Derek’s condition.

In conversation with the Mirror, he explained, “Following a Covid infection, regardless of hospitalization or treatment, the risk of experiencing a cardiovascular event such as a heart attack or stroke significantly increases in the subsequent 12 months. Long-term lung issues are also common due to infection-related damage, along with enduring alterations to the immune system, leading to a higher likelihood of developing autoimmune diseases (over 40 per cent increased risk).”

Dr. Nye added, “Derek’s journey has been immensely significant, considering the severity of his case.”

“Derek is likely to contend with several enduring health issues due to his specific reaction to the Covid infection, along with the medical interventions, such as ventilation, attempted to save him. We understand that the Covid virus affects the cardiovascular system, heightening the risk of clots leading to heart attacks and organ failure.”

“While Derek’s situation isn’t unique, it remains relatively uncommon compared to the large number of individuals who’ve contracted the virus, even multiple times.”

A source informed The Sun recently: “This setback has been a devastating blow for Derek’s family and the dedicated caregivers.

“Kate has been by his side constantly, willing him to overcome this latest struggle for his life. Derek has faced numerous battles and has, against all odds, emerged victorious each time. Kate has been absolutely incredible — supporting him while being an exceptional mother to Darcey and Billy, and striving to balance their hopes for a family Christmas.”
