Coronation Street enthusiasts are in for a treat as a star from Desperate Housewives is set to make an appearance on the famous cobbles.

Viewers will see childhood sweethearts Leanne Battersby and Nick Tilsley face a tumultuous period in their relationship. The source of their strife is a captivating leader of a support group known as The Institute, which threatens to derail their partnership.

The storyline thickens as the couple navigates the aftermath of Simon Barlow’s legal troubles. Following a car crash involving Nick’s son, Sam Blakeman, while under the influence, Simon, who considers Leanne his legal mother, braces himself for the magistrate’s judgement. In a display of solidarity, Sam decides to pen a character reference for Simon.

Later in the week, as Leanne and Simon prepare to head to court, Nick informs them he’s swamped with work and unable to accompany them. This news disappoints Simon and infuriates Leanne, leaving her quite upset with her partner. After the court session, Leanne, looking for a bit of solace, decides to take Simon to the Chariot Square Hotel, attracted by a seminar hosted by The Institute, a support group she’s interested in.

At the same time, the hotel is hosting a wedding fair, and Nick, albeit reluctantly, decides to join Leanne. However, it doesn’t take long for a member of The Institute named Rowan to captivate Leanne with his charm and insightful advice. She’s surprisingly taken aback when Rowan prompts her to open up about her deepest thoughts and emotions. Their conversation ends with Rowan giving her a reassuring smile, causing Leanne to blush.

The role of Rowan will be brought to life by Emrhys Cooper, an actor with a notable television background. At the age of 39, Cooper has already amassed an impressive array of credits, including appearances in ‘Mamma Mia!’, ‘Desperate Housewives’ as Richard, and even featuring in the Sugababes’ 2005 hit single ‘Push the Button’ music video.

Emrhys took to Instagram on Tuesday to share his excitement: “The cat is out of the bag. Today is a good day. I am brimming with pride and thrilled to announce that I’ve joined the cast of the iconic British TV series @coronationstreet, playing the character of Rowan Cunliffe. There are lots of exciting storylines on the horizon. Corrie holds the title of the world’s longest-running soap opera!”

For well over fifty years, Coronation Street has reflected the lives of the British public, capturing our collective highs and lows. It’s surreal to think that so many remarkable actors have graced these iconic cobblestones, and now, it’s my turn to tread them. The fact that my mother will be able to watch me from her nursing home fills me with immense joy. I’m deeply grateful to everyone involved in the show; they’ve embraced me wholeheartedly. I’m ready to dive in! Catch my first appearance on the 15th of March on ITV in the UK, and for viewers in the USA, on BritBox and Hulu. #CoronationStreet #RowanCunliffe

Jane Danson, known for her role as Leanne, shared her enthusiasm: “I’m thrilled for everyone to meet your character – it’s bound to be fascinating. Welcome to the street, dear xxx.” Meanwhile, Georgia Taylor, who plays Toyah Battersby, commented: “Having you here is an absolute joy, darling xx.”

Catch Coronation Street on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 8 pm on ITV1 and ITV X.
