Piers Morgan condemned Katie Hopkins as ‘despicable’ for her offensive comments about Kate Garraway, just days after the tragic death of Kate’s husband, Derek Draper.

The 58-year-old presenter shared a close friendship with Derek, who lost his life at the age of 56 after a nearly four-year battle with Covid. Derek, who was married to Piers’ former Good Morning Britain co-host Kate, 56, leaves behind a 17-year-old daughter, Darcey, and a 14-year-old son, Billy.

In November, Derek was flown to a specialised clinic in Mexico for treatment but suffered a cardiac arrest. Kate brought him back to London before Christmas, and he fought for his life in an Intensive Care Unit. Unfortunately, the former political lobbyist passed away on Wednesday, January 3.

During the weekend, controversial figure Hopkins callously ridiculed Kate and her grief in a video posted on social media. Hopkins, who was dismissed from her LBC show in 2017 due to comments about the Manchester Arena bombing and was Twitter-banned in 2020 for “violations of our hateful conduct policy,” later returned to the platform.

Piers Morgan condemned Katie Hopkins as ‘despicable’ for her abhorrent comments about Kate Garraway, just days after the passing of her husband Derek Draper.

The 58-year-old broadcaster, who was a close friend of Derek, responded to a video where Hopkins, drinking red wine, falsely claimed that ITV was airing a Life After Derek TV special and accused Kate of rushing out a book on Derek’s tragic passing. Both the TV documentary and the book mentioned by Hopkins did not exist. She tweeted, “Important @ITV documentary tonight. #KateGarraway. #LifeAfterDerek allegedly sponsored by Fizzzzzzzeeerr.” The last part of her tweet referenced the vaccine company Pfizer, despite Derek contracting Covid before the vaccine was invented. Hopkins added, “Accompanying book available wherever you get your 100th boooooosta #ExcessDeaths.”

Upon discovering her cruel remarks, Piers took to social media to share an article about her comments, simply adding the word “Despicable” in his tweet.

In a previous disclosure, Piers recounted the moment he learned of Derek’s death, stating, “I woke up in Los Angeles on Friday morning to the message from her that I’d dreaded for nearly four years.” He wrote in The Sun, “‘Dearest Piers,’ it began, ‘Derek has passed away…’ I was devastated, but not entirely shocked. Kate had told me things were looking very bleak when we texted each other on Christmas Day.”

On January 5, Kate announced the tragic news of Derek’s death at the age of 56. Many co-stars expressed their condolences beneath her post and on their ITV programmes. Piers, on the platform now known as X, formerly Twitter, shared a message: “RIP Derek Draper. A brilliantly clever & funny man who fought his COVID health hell with such courage & resilience, helped every step of the way by his magnificent wife @kategarraway whose loyal, loving, selfless devotion was truly astounding. Heartbreaking news.”
