Drawing from the iconic Tim Burton film and enriched by the evocative melodies of Danny Elfman and Terry Davies, Bourne and his New Adventures ensemble present the tale of a boy fashioned by an unconventional inventor, left to fend for himself upon the inventor’s passing, onto the theatrical stage.

With just scissors for hands, a woman welcomes him into her family, but is the town of Harmony prepared to embrace such an unconventional newcomer?

Steve Cowton, The Lowry’s head of theatres, expressed his delight: “We’re thrilled to welcome New Adventures back for another week of fantastic dance. The annual arrival of Matthew Bourne’s company marks the beginning of our Christmas season, and we’re especially excited to host Edward Scissorhands, unseen in Salford since 2014.

“This show stands as one of the company’s most lavish and extraordinary productions, blending Matthew’s captivating choreography with the beautiful music of Danny Elfman and Terry Davies. Audiences should brace themselves for something truly exceptional.”

Liam Mower and Stephen Murray will share the role of Edward Scissorhands, while Katrina Lyndon and Ashley Shaw will share the role of Kim Boggs.

Matthew Bourne, known for groundbreaking productions like an all-male Swan Lake and Peaky Blinders: The Redemption of Thomas Shelby, remarked, “The tale of Edward Scissorhands resonates more than ever. In a time where embracing individuality is both celebrated and condemned, its narrative on how we treat those perceived as different in our communities remains as powerful and pertinent as when Caroline Thompson crafted the screenplay for Tim Burton’s iconic film over three decades ago.

“Our rendition of Edward Scissorhands, staged by New Adventures, stands alone globally as a theatrical marvel.

“One of the highlights of our performance is the diverse casting. Our depiction of Harmony USA comprises six families, each with a mother, father, son, and daughter (with the inclusion, this year, of a same-sex parent family for the first time).”

“We have an incredible chance to champion younger dancers, many of whom have flourished through our talent development programmes. Additionally, we’re reuniting with numerous former New Adventures stars who will portray the roles of the parents!

“New Adventures embodies a sense of family, especially evident in this production.

“I’m delighted to announce Edward’s return for our 2023/4 season, where he’ll continue to spread his message of joy, creativity, and acceptance.”
