Dawn French, star of “The Vicar of Dibley,” has provided her fans with a health update from her hospital bed, recounting an injury she suffered a whopping 14 years ago. The cherished actress endured a painful incident when she tried to leap from a 10ft ledge on The Paul O’Grady Show.
The mishap occurred in 2009 as a homage to a classic scene in the BBC sitcom where the character Geraldine Granger, played by French, finds herself chest-deep in mud after jumping into a puddle. As per reports from the Mirror, the 66-year-old’s attempt at a copycat moment, meant as a tribute to the iconic comedy show, turned out to be “catastrophically misguided.” This left the star “reliant on steroids” to manage the ensuing pain.
Providing an update on her health via Instagram, the comedian shared that she recently underwent a knee replacement after enduring years of discomfort, accompanying the revelation with a snapshot of her bandaged leg.
Describing the moment captured in the image, she remarked, “The deed is done. Fresh knee installed. Now, the journey towards recovery begins…”
Supportive fans swiftly flooded the comments, extending warm wishes to the beloved celebrity. Many urged the mother of one to take all the time necessary, especially after having to call off her recent performances due to arthritis.
Reflecting on the incident during her solo performance in October, Dawn recounted, “They built a 10ft-high mound using scaffolding covered in AstroTurf. The concept was for there to be enough distance for me to vanish into. But what awaited my fall? Absolutely nothing. Just 10ft below, two slender crash mats lay in a film studio with a solid concrete floor. Anyone with sense would have seen the disaster looming. Anyone but me.”
Dawn shared a photo with viewers, revealing, “This picture holds quite an emotional weight. It captures the final moments when my body was whole. It marks the last instance of having both legs in working order. I took a leap, descending 10 feet onto two crash mats. Unfortunately, one leg twisted unnaturally beneath me upon landing, accompanied by a heavy impact. The sound that followed was the most dreadful twang imaginable.”
