Potential shocker on Coronation Street: AI suggests bad guy Stephen Reid might be poised for an unexpected comeback on the popular soap.

The notorious serial killer’s reign of terror finally met its end last week. To jog fans’ memory, Stephen, portrayed by Todd Boyce, was responsible for the demise of Teddy and Leo Thompkins, along with his business associate Rufus Donahue.

He also deceived his own mother Audrey Roberts, pilfering money from her, and conned Carla Connor out of the factory funds. In a particularly sinister turn, he dosed her with LSD, inducing a false psychotic episode.

However, this past Friday (October 13), Stephen met his match when he was struck down by Peter Barlow in a car chase while attempting to flee the cobbles. His lifeless form was bundled into a body bag and swiftly whisked away by an ambulance crew.

Stephen could be returning to Coronation Street in a shock twist, according to fans who reckon he won’t be away for too long.

The Daily Star asked Bard AI, one of the world’s most popular artificially intelligent “creative” tools, if Stephen could be back on the soap. The program responded: “There is always the possibility that Stephen could return.”

Bard AI then outlined a “few potential avenues” through which the antagonist could “hypothetically” make a return. It elaborated: “He might reappear in a flashback or dream sequence, or manifest as a ghost or hallucination.”

The system went on to say: “One conceivable motive for Stephen’s return could be to offer closure for certain characters who were impacted by his transgressions. For instance, Jenny Connor, who was romantically involved with Stephen, might harbour unresolved emotions concerning his demise.” It further noted: “Carla Barlow, who fell victim to Stephen’s poisoning, could also hold some lingering resentment towards him.”

Another factor the AI considers in Stephen’s potential return is to “introduce a fresh storyline.” The software noted: “For instance, if Stephen’s spirit were to manifest before Jenny, it could serve as a means to delve into the themes of grief and loss. Alternatively, if Stephen were to return from the beyond, it might pave the way for a new enigmatic murder plot.”

Mirroring Bard AI’s sentiments, avid viewers of the soap opera are also of the belief that Stephen might make a comeback. They speculate that his return is poised to bring chaos and upheaval just in time for the festive season.

On X, previously recognized as Twitter, a user speculated, “I have a feeling Stephen will make a comeback for Christmas.” Another pondered, “They’re bound to catch Stephen during the festive season, aren’t they?”

Don’t miss Coronation Street airing this Monday on ITV1 and ITVX at 8pm.
