The renowned writer and poet Benjamin Zephaniah has passed away at the age of 65. He died in the early hours of Thursday morning following a diagnosis of a brain tumour eight weeks ago.

The announcement of his passing was made on Benjamin’s Instagram page, expressing deep sadness and regret.

The statement clarified that the actor’s wife remained by his side until he passed away.

“We extended his presence to the world, and we understand that many will feel surprised and saddened by this announcement,” the statement expressed. “Benjamin was a genuine trailblazer and visionary; his contributions to poetry, literature, music, television, and radio were extensive.

“Through an illustrious career that spanned a vast collection of poems, literary works, musical compositions, and contributions to television and radio, Benjamin leaves behind a legacy brimming with joy and brilliance. We deeply appreciate the affection you have shown.

Benjamin Zephaniah has died at the age of 65

Benjamin, hailing from Birmingham, gained renown for his literary achievements and simultaneous activism in addressing societal concerns like racism, poverty, and social inequities.

Recognised as one of The Times’ 50 most significant postwar writers in 2008, the author notably declined an OBE in 2003, citing its ties to the British Empire and its historical involvement in slavery.

Benjamin authored five novels alongside children’s poetry, notably including “We Are Britain!”, a compilation of poems published in 2002 celebrating diversity. His success extended to the children’s book “Talking Turkeys,” which gained immense popularity upon its 1994 release.

His on-screen presence was also notable; from 2013 to 2022, he portrayed Jeremiah Jesus in the BBC One drama “Peaky Blinders,” featuring Cillian Murphy.

Tributes flooded social media on Thursday, with author Michael Rosen expressing his devastation: “I’m deeply saddened. I admired, respected, learned from, and loved him. My love and condolences go to the family and all who cherished him.”

ITV journalist Charlene White expressed her gratitude: “Thank you for everything, Benjamin Zephaniah.”

Actress Adjoa Andoh from “Bridgerton” remarked: “Today, we’ve lost a giant. Benjamin Zephaniah. A wonderful poet, Professor, OBE, advocate for love and humanity in all aspects. Heartbroken. Rest in Your Power – our brother @BZephaniah.”
