Autumnwatch enthusiasts have received exciting news as a fresh series of films, produced by the creators of the popular nature programme, has been unveiled. Although the show itself was initially cancelled to economise for the BBC, it’s making a return with Chris Packham, Michaela Strachan, and Gillian Burke in a new format.

The One Show is scheduled to broadcast a trilogy of films, alongside live connections, spanning three evenings starting from Tuesday, October 24, at 7 pm. The hosts will be situated at various locations across the country, exploring wildlife such as the largest colony of greater horseshoe bats in the UK, the annual red deer rut in the New Forest, and the haunting calls of tawny owls in Kielder Forest, Northumberland, as reported by MirrorOnline.

In addition to this, The One Show presenters will be linked live to Iolo Williams at RSPB Arne in Dorset, which is presently home to Springwatch and Winterwatch. The Welsh presenter aims to provide live visuals of sika deer, foxes, hares, and wading birds using thermal camera technology, along with action from a barn owl nesting box.

Michaela, who will be journeying from her residence in South Africa to participate, commented: ‘Autumn signifies a splendid shift in nature’s timetable. I’m thrilled that we can continue to present this seasonal spectacle to viewers all over the UK and capture the marvels of British wildlife.’

Each film will document the yearly shifts in animal behaviour throughout the season, as well as highlight the efforts being made to safeguard the environment and local wildlife.

BBC Specialist Factual chief Jack Bootle expressed his delight at the collaboration with The One Show to bring back Autumnwatch for three special seasonal episodes. He emphasized that these specials, along with Springwatch and Winterwatch, offer a valuable platform to showcase the marvels of British wildlife to our audience across the UK.

Back in February, the BBC, in a statement announcing the discontinuation of Autumnwatch after a 17-year run, explained, “These are financially challenging times, and we must make tough decisions to allocate our resources towards content with the greatest impact. Unfortunately, this means Autumnwatch will not continue. Instead, we’re directing additional funding towards Springwatch and Winterwatch, as they are the most popular among our viewers.”

Last night, The One Show’s editor, Joanne Vaughan Jones, expressed her excitement about collaborating with the Autumnwatch team for three evenings starting Tuesday, October 24, at 7pm.
