Dave Myers, star of the Hairy Bikers, touched the hearts of fans when he shared details about his battle with cancer during a Christmas special. The 66-year-old celebrity chef candidly spoke about his illness on the Hairy Bikers: Coming Home For Christmas, which aired on 19th December. Alongside his colleague and friend Si King, the show centred on their culinary passions while also delving into Dave’s decision to keep his cancer diagnosis private.

In an update about his health after enduring challenging months, he revealed, ‘I lost my appetite. I experienced frequent bouts of dizziness. After the second round of chemotherapy, my hair underwent a drastic change. It was a complete loss of hair, including eyelashes and everything else.’

He remarked, “I’ve chosen not to disclose the specifics of my cancer as I consider it private. I’d rather not have the media speculate on my life expectancy. It’s not my desire. The impact it’s having on my wife Lil has left me feeling immensely guilty.”

In addition, he moved fans to tears when he expressed the significance of his motorcycle journeys with Si, especially after he regained the ability to ride.

Dave expressed, “I feel a surge of youthful enthusiasm. I’m going to ring Kingy. This means we can hit the road together once more.”

Following the show, a fan took to social media to express their emotions, stating, “I’ve never shed a tear watching someone ride a bike before!” Another fan added, “#hairybikers making me emotional just 15 minutes in…”

Prior to Tuesday night’s episode, Dave shared his concerns about not making it to this Christmas, while also acknowledging the support he received from friends, medical professionals, and his wife. The chef, who was initially diagnosed with cancer in May 2022 and has been undergoing chemotherapy since then, mentioned, “I’ve been unwell for the past 18 months, and our work-life balance has been erratic. Slowly getting back to work was suggested, and then we worked on a Christmas special.

“We aimed for something unique. There’s a profound aspect to food when shared with those you deeply care about. It becomes even more significant.”

This time, we shared that meal with the individuals to whom I owe my life—the nurses, the consultants, and the physiotherapists who guided me back to walking.

He added, ‘This Christmas is one I never imagined I’d be present to cherish, and it’s all thanks to these people, for which I’m immensely grateful. It’s not the end as I’m still undergoing treatment, but it marks a significant milestone.’

Dave continued, ‘Having Si’s support has been incredible. A great deal of credit also goes to my wife; she’s been by my side since the beginning. It’s absolutely crucial, and I genuinely empathize with those who have to endure it alone.’
