BBC radio stalwart retires after four decades with the station

Tony Blackburn will be resigning from his role at BBC Radio London, marking the conclusion of his tenure presenting multiple shows on the station since 1981.

This weekend marks the final Soul On Sunday show for the 80-year-old presenter on BBC Radio London. Making the announcement via Twitter, the former I’m A Celeb victor stated that the decision to depart from the station was his own. He reassured fans by confirming his continued presence on other BBC radio channels, particularly BBC Radio 2.

“Addressing his followers, he shared, ‘Hello everyone, just a heads-up that after numerous fulfilling years at @BBCRadioLondon, I’ve opted to bid adieu, and this Sunday will conclude my stint with Soul On Sunday. Throughout the years, we’ve had marvellous moments with incredible live shows for Children in Need and an array of splendid music. I’ll still be on @BBCBerkshire, @BBCOxford, and @BBCRadioSolent on Sunday afternoons, as well as on the esteemed @BBCRadio2.

“‘This decision is entirely mine, and I’m grateful for the joyful years here, but it’s time for a new chapter. Thank you for tuning in.

A representative from the BBC conveyed, “Tony has been an integral part of BBC Radio London for an extensive period, and we extend our gratitude for his significant contributions to the station.

“He remains a highly valued member within the broader BBC Radio network and will continue his regular broadcasts across BBC Radio Berkshire, Oxford & Solent, as well as on his BBC Radio 2 show during weekends.”

Fans expressed disappointment over the announcement, taking to social media to share their affection for his BBC Radio London programme.

One fan, @RussellKane, remarked, “Their loss is undeniable. You are a legend and an inspiration since your inception. Your steadfast commitment to your beliefs and passions is commendable.

Renowned fan @marculmus, formerly on X (formerly Twitter), lauded the 1980s Radio London soul show as ‘legendary’ and a ‘must-listen!’ The radio luminary graciously responded, reminiscing, ‘I cherished hosting that show immensely. Three hours of morning joy and splendid music.’

Addressing concerned fans, Tony reassured them, affirming, ‘Retirement isn’t on my mind, not now, not ever,’ firmly stating, ‘It’s not in my plans.’

He also acknowledged @laurenahouse, expressing gratitude for staying on in his various roles: ‘My profound passion for radio persists; I’m fortunate to work in stations I adore, alongside remarkable individuals who bring immense joy. I’m indebted to my incredibly loyal listeners and the live Sounds Of The Sixties theatre show.’

‘I consider myself incredibly fortunate; thank you, all.’

Tony made radio history as the inaugural disc jockey on Radio 1 in its 1967 launch, subsequently establishing an illustrious career as one of the UK’s most recognisable radio personalities.

In November 2010, he assumed control of Radio 2’s Pick Of The Pops programme, taking the baton from its two preceding, long-serving hosts, Alan Freeman and Dale Winton.

He clinched victory in I’m A Celebrity back in 2002.

Earlier this year, the Radio 2 luminary was admitted to the hospital with pneumonia subsequent to disclosing a chest infection.

It was subsequently disclosed that he had also contracted sepsis while battling the infection, leading to a total of two months spent in hospital.

Speaking to BBC Scotland, Tony recounted, “I found myself in hospital for two months with sepsis, pneumonia, and blood poisoning. And it didn’t dawn on me how seriously ill I was until one day when my entire family was gathered around my bed in the hospital. That’s when I realised, ‘This isn’t good.'”
