The BBC has decided to pause the long-standing quiz show ‘A Question Of Sport’, concluding its over 50-year tenure on the national broadcaster.

A spokesperson for the BBC stated, “Due to rising costs and financial challenges, tough decisions had to be taken, resulting in the current suspension of ‘A Question Of Sport’.”

The broadcaster highlighted the importance of delivering value for BBC licence fee payers, leading to a reshuffling of programmes to emphasise impactful content that attracts viewers to BBC iPlayer.

A source from the BBC indicated that this isn’t necessarily the end for the programme, which originally aired in 1970.

The suspension of ‘A Question Of Sport’ follows the departure of Sue Barker as a presenter in 2020, along with longstanding team captains Matt Dawson and Phil Tufnell.

Paddy McGuinness temporarily helmed the show with team captains Sam Quek and Ugo Monye, but their tenure lasted only two seasons.

This decision comes after the recent announcement by the broadcaster that the enduring motoring show ‘Top Gear’ would be put on hold “for the foreseeable future”.

The production of ‘Top Gear’ had been halted since former England cricket captain Flintoff, aged 45, was hospitalised in December 2022 following an accident at the Top Gear test track in Dunsfold Aerodrome, Surrey.
