Barbra Streisand has recounted her inaugural romantic entanglement, which involved an inadvertent encounter with marijuana, in her recently released autobiography.

Within the pages, she chronicled her interactions with a gentleman with whom she shared a number of intriguing evenings, culminating in a pivotal night when the young singer and actress surrendered her innocence.

Beneath the glow of a “full moon”, she recounted, he extended a cigarette, unbeknownst to Barbra that it harboured marijuana. Reflecting on the incident, Barbra wrote: “I took a drag and my legs went weak. I thought it was him. Turns out it was marijuana, a substance I seldom partook in (and rarely have since).”

Following that eventful night, Barbra lamented that the man treated her callously, “as if nothing significant had occurred”. The lingering memory left Barbra in a state of despondency, a sentiment that ultimately stoked her creative fire.

The man ignored Barbra, yet that moment left an indelible mark on her. She recounted, “God, I resented him for not being kinder. But it set my mind racing. Some nights, I felt like a cat in heat… my body yearned for him… emotions I’d never known before. At least it provided me with more material to draw from… When I sang about yearning for someone, for the first time, I truly comprehended it.”

The star also seized the opportunity in her memoir to debunk assertions from unauthorized biographies of “nonexistent romances.” She proceeded to rebuke a specific claim regarding a fellow student from her school days, even the teacher couldn’t place his name. In her autobiography, Barbra chose to lay bare the truth, putting an end to speculations.

Barbra wrote: “The notion that someone could fabricate a tale of romance with me… well, it’s abhorrent. It feels like such a profound intrusion into my life. And then the story continues to circulate in book after book, because the authors just keep regurgitating the same fictitious nonsense.”

“My Name Is Barbra,” published by Penguin, is now accessible for purchase in bookstores and on Amazon.
