Regrettably, Andre Braugher, renowned for his roles in Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Homicide Life on the Street, has passed away at the age of 61.

His publicist verified his passing on Monday, disclosing that he had been unwell for a brief period. The actor initially gained recognition in the film industry through his performance in ‘Glory,’ sharing the screen with Matthew Broderick and Denzel Washington.

He gained widespread recognition for his compelling depiction of Captain Raymond Holt in Brooklyn 99, alongside his role as Detective Frank Pembleton in Homicide: Life on the Street.

Andre’s portrayal of Detective Frank in the gripping drama series from 1992 to 1998 earned him an Emmy award. His remarkable performance culminated in winning the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series in the final year of the show.

During his time on Homicide: Life on the Street, Andre encountered his future wife, Ami Brabson, who was also part of the cast. They married in 1991 and are blessed with three children: Michael, Isaiah, and John Wesley.

In a 2020 interview with Variety, Andre disclosed that he made a conscious decision to prioritise his family and personal life over advancing his career, a choice he stood by without any regrets.

He articulated, “My career has been intriguing, but I believe it could have been more extensive. It could have encompassed various spheres such as directing and producing. However, this expansion would have come at the cost of my personal life.”

Andre’s acting journey comprised diverse roles, notably in acclaimed shows like House, M.D., Law and Order: Special Victims Unit, and as the voice behind California Governor Woodchuck Coodchuck-Berkwotiz in Netflix’s BoJack Horseman.

He clinched an Emmy in 2006 for his contribution to the short-lived crime drama, Thief. His most recent film portrayal was as journalist Dean Baquet in She Said, released in 2022.

He was also scheduled to feature in ‘The Residence,’ a Netflix mystery series. However, it remains unclear whether filming had concluded before his passing.

Andre has been receiving an outpouring of love and respect from his fans online. One supporter tweeted: ‘Rest in peace, Andre Braugher. An exceptional actor and a cherished presence both on and off the screen. Thank you for the warmth, joy, and laughter you brought. May you rest peacefully, Captain.’

Another admirer shared: ‘Andre Braugher, your portrayal of Raymond Holt brought immense joy to my life and countless others. Your talent and the character you breathed life into will always hold a special place in our hearts. Rest in peace.’
