Word has it that Alex Bain, known for his role as Simon Barlow in Coronation Street, is set to bid farewell to the ITV soap next summer. Sources suggest he's buzzing with excitement to embrace fresh opportunities beyond the realms of Weatherfield.
Alex Bain, known for his portrayal of Simon Barlow on Coronation Street for 15 years, is reportedly bidding farewell to the show. Joining in 2008 as a seven-year-old Simon, he depicted the son of Peter and his partner Lucy, who tragically succumbed to cancer.
Throughout his tenure on the soap opera, Alex’s character engaged in various gripping storylines, notably a domestic abuse plot where Simon was the aggressor and his on-screen mother, Leanne Battersby, became the victim. ITV has yet to make an official statement about Alex’s departure, but reports suggest he’s departing to concentrate on his future endeavors.
According to a source speaking to The Sun, “Alex is saddened to leave Coronation Street as it’s become like a family to him. However, he understands that the timing is right to move forward.”
They mentioned: “He’s eagerly anticipating what lies ahead and exploring other opportunities.” It’s anticipated that his final appearances will be screened in the summer of 2024.
Although the details of his departure remain shrouded in mystery, Alex has hinted at embarking on a different career path beyond the Weatherfield-based soap, surprising many. Rather than immediately diving into another acting role, Alex is considering a more imaginative avenue.
Back in 2020, at the age of 22, Alex founded Mjollnir Productions Ltd, a company dedicated to television programming and broadcasting, where he currently holds sole responsibility.
At present, the company operates without any staff, and as of June 30, 2023, Alex maintains £100 in the company accounts, mirroring the financial status from 2022.
He’s been dropping hints about new projects via social media. When quizzed about his plans, he teased his followers: “All the updates will be on my performance production page @mjollnirproductionsltd once it’s safe to start creating again! You’ll have to hold on until then, but get ready.”
Alex also hinted at potentially delving into dance and music. When asked about collaborating with Ella Hammill, he remarked, “Patience @ella_hammill! It’s coming soon! Just wait until people hear the music we’re brewing together! They won’t know what’s hit them! [sic]”
Coronation Street enthusiasts will need to stay tuned to discover Simon’s departure from the cobbles. Speculation suggests he might follow in his father Peter Barlow’s footsteps, who left on Boxing Day for a sailing expedition with a friend.
