Iconic figure of BBC Radio 1 resigns from the station after 21 years, just days before their final show

BBC Radio 1Xtra's esteemed DJ Ace will soon air his last show, marking the culmination of his remarkable tenure spanning more than twenty years with the network.

A longstanding figure at BBC Radio 1Xtra has announced their immediate departure from the station.

DJ Ace, who joined the station back in 2002, has revealed his decision to “move on” after an illustrious career that involved interviewing some of the music industry’s biggest names, such as Usher and Alicia Keys. In a statement, he expressed, “After two decades, numerous daytime slots, and over 10,000 hours on air, I’ve concluded it’s time for a new chapter. My time at 1Xtra has been immensely rewarding, and I cherish countless proud moments. I’m deeply grateful for all the opportunities I’ve been given.”

His final broadcast is scheduled for January 20 across the station. Moreover, Ace’s successor has been confirmed, with Chuckie stepping in to helm the R&B show. Chuckie commented, “This is an incredibly surreal and thrilling moment for me. Being part of the 1Xtra team is an honour, and I eagerly anticipate crafting exceptional musical experiences with our listeners.”

Meanwhile, Faron McKenize, the head of BBC Radio 1Xtra, expressed his enthusiasm about Chuckie joining the station: “I’m truly thrilled to welcome Chuckie aboard. His profound passion and devotion to R&B, coupled with his extensive knowledge of the genre, are remarkable. I’m eagerly anticipating the direction he takes the show. Ace has played an immensely significant role at 1Xtra, dedicating himself entirely to the station over the past 21 years. He has played a defining role in shaping 1Xtra and its audience, showcasing incredible talent on radio. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to him for all his contributions and wish him the very best for the future.”

Fans and fellow broadcasters have taken to social media to respond to the news. BBC Radio 1Xtra presenter Richie Brave wrote: “One thing I’ve always admired about DJ Ace is his deep understanding of R&B. He lives and breathes R&B – from historical references and producers to samples, timelines, and careers. Moreover, his support for UK R&B is commendable. He’s an exceptional broadcaster. Remember when some claimed R&B was dead? Ace never wavered; he let the music speak for itself. He stood firm, knowing that eventually, everyone would recognize its greatness. Truly a legend.”

A fan expressed, “DJAce, you’ll be sorely missed on my favourite daytime show at 1Xtra & is a radio hero to Elijah!” Another fan lamented, “I can’t believe DJ Ace is departing from 1Xtra. It feels like the end of an era.”
