Colin Burgess, the original drummer for AC/DC, has passed away, as confirmed by the heavy metal band’s Facebook page.

In a statement shared on Friday night, the iconic group expressed their sorrow, stating, “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Colin Burgess. He served as our inaugural drummer and was a highly respected musician. Fond memories linger; may Colin rock in peace.” The specific cause of his death has not been disclosed.

In 1973, Burgess joined AC/DC alongside his guitarist siblings Angus and Malcolm Young, vocalist Dave Evans, and bassist Larry Van Kriedt.

However, Burgess’s tenure with AC/DC was short-lived, concluding shortly after the band achieved success with their debut hit, “Can I Sit Next to You Girl,” and their inaugural performance at Chequers nightclub in Sydney, Australia.

Within a year, Burgess was dismissed by the band following allegations of being intoxicated on stage during a 1974 performance. Despite the drummer’s attempt to salvage his position by attributing his condition to a spiked drink, his explanation was disregarded.

AC/DC subsequently enlisted several other drummers, among them the longstanding member Phil Rudd. The band went as far as re-recording ‘Can I Sit Next To You Girl’ with Rudd behind the drums.

Burgess also served as the drummer for the renowned Australian rock band, The Masters Apprentices, from 1968 to 1972. In 1988, he and his fellow band members were honoured with induction into Australia’s ARIA Hall of Fame.

Mr. Burgess passed away at the age of 77.

Rest in peace.
