Patti Smith cancels performance due to hospitalisation following a ‘sudden illness
Renowned punk icon Patti Smith has regrettably had to cancel a planned performance in Italy due to falling ill and being admitted to hospital unexpectedly.
Smith commenced an eight-date tour across Italy starting in Ancona on November 28th. Her most recent show was at Modena Cathedral on December 9th, but due to health issues, she had to cancel her performance at the Duse Theatre in Bologna on December 12th.
Reports from Italian publication TG Com 24 indicate that Smith became unwell while in Bologna and was subsequently taken to Maggiore hospital. The nature of her illness hasn’t been disclosed, nor has the expected duration of her hospital stay.
The Duse Theatre released a statement saying, “It is with great regret that we announce the cancellation of Patti Smith’s concert due to her sudden illness.”
The message concluded with wishes for Smith’s swift recovery, stating, “We apologise for any inconvenience caused by this unforeseen situation. Our heartfelt well wishes are extended to the artist for a speedy recovery.”
As of now, Smith is still slated to perform at the Malibran Theatre in Venice on December 14th, but this performance might be subject to change.
Additionally, Smith is scheduled for performances in Chicago and New York later this month. She also recently unveiled plans for two shows in Dublin at Vicar Street in June next year.
Earlier this year, Smith participated in Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg’s final school strike in Stockholm. Thunberg, who had been striking every Friday for the past five years, expressed her astonishment on Twitter, stating, “When I began striking in 2018, I never anticipated its impact. After three weeks of daily strikes, a small group of children, including myself, resolved to continue every Friday. And we did, leading to the formation of Fridays For Future.”

The forthcoming show at the Malibran theatre in Venice on Thursday, December 14, marks her next scheduled performance.
There’s uncertainty surrounding Patti’s ability to perform, given her current health status.
Following this event, Patti plans to travel to the States for performances in Chicago and Brooklyn.
Her tour extends into 2024, and the Chicago-born artist is set to grace Dublin, Ireland with her presence in June next year.
