A man has lost his life following an encounter with armed police while driving on the A52 Bingham bypass, linked to an ongoing murder inquiry. The incident occurred in the early hours of Thursday, prompting the police watchdog to initiate an investigation.

Leicestershire Police were conducting a murder probe after discovering the body of a man in his forties in a Plungar field on Tuesday afternoon. A 56-year-old man from Grantham was arrested on Wednesday on suspicion of murder but has been released pending further investigation.

At 12:30 am on Thursday, a 46-year-old driver, under police pursuit on the A52 near Nottingham, sustained a severe head injury. Despite immediate first aid efforts by officers, the man was pronounced dead at the scene. A non-police issue firearm was found in the silver Mazda Tamura.

The police force has made a mandatory referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) and has pledged full cooperation. An IOPC spokesperson mentioned that initial accounts from involved officers have been provided, and police body-worn footage is under review.

Leicestershire Police have called for information and witnesses related to the Plungar murder investigation. Detective Inspector David Greenhalgh, the senior investigating officer, stated, “Our inquiries following the discovery of a man’s body in Plungar remain ongoing as we continue to establish the full circumstances of what has happened. Specialist officers are providing support to the man’s family at this time.”

Road closures persist on the A52 Bingham bypass, according to police statements.
