World famous magician David Berglas has passed away, with his family expressing their heartfelt tributes.

Described as one of the most influential magicians and mentalists of the 20th century, David left us at the age of 97. The Magic Circle, widely acclaimed as the most esteemed magic society worldwide, confirmed his passing in London on Friday evening.

Known as the International Man of Mystery, he made history as the first magician to host his own programme on British television, “Meet David Berglas,” in 1954. In the 1980s, he graced our screens once again with a second television series, “The Mind of David Berglas,” captivating a multitude of celebrities, including Omar Sharif, Christopher Lee, and Britt Ekland.

Over the years, he made frequent appearances on British television and radio, earning a household name status for his remarkable stunts. One memorable feat involved driving a car around London while blindfolded.

Berglas gained renown within magic circles for a trick known as the Berglas Effect, which allowed him to locate a spectator’s chosen card at any position in a deck. It has since become revered as the holy grail of magic effects, a secret he took with him to the grave.

In 2018, Berglas was honoured with an MBE by the Prince of Wales for his contributions to magic and psychology. Upon receiving the award, he remarked, “I am delighted to accept this honour but even more pleased that the art of magic has at last been recognised. I have spent over 60 years entertaining people in person, on radio and television – ‘reading their minds’ – but I certainly didn’t see this one coming.”

During his tenure as president of The Magic Circle from 1989 to 1998, Berglas breathed new life into the society. Under his leadership, The Magic Circle decided to admit women to the illusionist society in 1991.

His son Marvin Berglas, who has followed in his father’s footsteps and was elected president of The Magic Circle in September of this year, said: “My father was a giant in the magic fraternity, known for his originality, creativity and showmanship. His mysteries have not only baffled audiences but also his peers. However, to us, his family, he will always be best remembered as a loving husband, father and grandfather.”

While he initially expressed a lack of interest in magic, it wasn’t until he turned 16 that Marvin truly understood his father’s passion. Marvin told MailOnline: “Magic was a part of our life. It was interesting being immersed with some of the best magicians in the world who were also family friends. So I grew up with amazing magicians and they inspired me really.”

Illusionist Derren Brown lauded Berglas as “one of our greatest living magical performers” when Berglas received his MBE. “Generations of magicians owe him a debt of gratitude,” Brown said. “Each of my shows is indebted to his artistry and astonishing body of work. I thank him for his constant inspiration.”
