BBC Newsnight bids farewell to its longstanding host, Kirsty Wark, who has been an integral part of the programme for the past three decades.

Kirsty initially joined the team in 1993 and will continue to helm BBC documentaries, along with presenting programmes like The Reunion and Start the Week on Radio 4.

Reflecting on her decision, Kirsty shared with the BBC: “Today marks 30 years of anchoring Newsnight. It’s been a tremendous honour to be a part of this rigorous, inventive programme alongside a truly gifted group of colleagues – many cohorts over the years, most recently under the stewardship of Esme Wren, followed by Stewart Maclean.

“There isn’t a day I don’t eagerly anticipate coming into the office, and each day I glean new insights from the team, spanning everything from facets of American foreign policy to crafting an exceptional mojito.”

She went on to say: “Last year, I discussed with both Director General Tim Davie and Stewart my intention to conclude my three-decade tenure on the show after the upcoming election, and that remains the plan.”

“When the time comes, it will undoubtedly be a significant transition. Nevertheless, I’ll be departing from Newsnight, but my association with the BBC will persist. I’ll continue to host The Reunion and Start the Week on Radio 4, and engage in television documentaries. Additionally, I’ll be wrapping up, at long last, my third novel. Exciting times are on the horizon.”

In response, Tim Davie remarked, “Generations of Newsnight viewers have been enriched by Kirsty’s commanding presence, her incisive analysis, and her journalistic finesse. She sets the benchmark for compelling yet authoritative hosting. On behalf of the entire BBC, I extend my gratitude for her dedicated service over the past 30 years.

“I’m pleased that the BBC will still have Kirsty with us even as she steps back from Newsnight, and I look forward to experiencing her contributions beyond this eventful political year.”

The successor to Kirsty’s position on the BBC Two programme has not yet been announced. She will, however, remain with us until the next general election, ensuring her presence on our screens for a little while longer.

Tune in to Newsnight on BBC Two at 10:30 pm on Friday, October 20. Episodes are also available for streaming on iPlayer.
