Coleen Rooney opens up about a ‘disturbing’ incident that nearly brought her marriage with Wayne to an end.
The ex-footballer and his spouse delved into their relationship in their recently released Disney+ documentary.
Coleen Rooney, aged 37, has been candid about the highs and lows in her marriage to footballer Wayne Rooney, also 37, yet they have consistently presented a united front.
Recently, the author of “Coleen Style Queen” disclosed that she seriously contemplated ending their relationship following some deeply troubling incidents in 2017. Coleen discussed this pivotal moment in their marriage in her Disney+ documentary, titled “Coleen Rooney: The Real Wagatha Story.” This documentary primarily chronicles her legal battle with Rebekah Vardy, stemming from accusations of private story leaks to the media.
The initial incident occurred shortly after Wayne was pulled over by police and subsequently found to be three times over the legal alcohol limit after a night of revelry in Cheshire, while Coleen was away on holiday with their four sons.
Adding to the complexity, the vehicle in question was not his own, but belonged to Laura Simpson, a 29-year-old woman he had encountered in a bar in Alderley Edge.
He asserted that he was driving her home because she was too intoxicated to drive herself, but he concedes in the documentary, “It doesn’t look great.”
As reported by The Sun, Wayne clarified: “You know, I’m driving another girl’s car and she’s in the passenger seat, it doesn’t look great. I know what it was but I also know what it looked like.
“Yeah, [Coleen] wasn’t happy, of course she wasn’t happy, but to be honest I can’t even remember speaking to the girl in the bar, never met her before in my life. So there was never any talk of anything happening, or going to happen.”
Wayne further acknowledged that he came to the realisation that he could jeopardise his marriage over situations like this one. “I knew Coleen was the girl you wanted to marry, to have kids with and spend the rest of my life with.
“To put myself in a position where I can almost throw that away is so silly and stupid of me and it’s not what I want at all,” he expressed.
Reflecting on her reaction at the time, Coleen expressed, “It was deeply distressing. I’ve experienced that sinking feeling in my stomach a few times, and I wouldn’t wish it on anyone.
“You start to question, ‘Do I truly know this person?’ when events like that unfold… you’re not the person I entered into marriage with, and you’re not the person I want you to be.”
She goes on to say, “Wayne wished for things to return to normal, but it wasn’t as simple as that. I was still hurt, and I couldn’t see what lay ahead for us as a couple.
“I told him, ‘I simply can’t continue like this.'”

The childhood sweethearts became engaged at the age of 17 and dedicated five years to meticulously planning their envisioned wedding in Santa Margherita Ligure, Italy. Their vows were exchanged on the 12th of June, 2008, in an extravagant celebration estimated to be valued at £5 million.
Though they faced challenges in their marriage, notably Wayne’s admission of visiting a brothel, there have been no indications of a separation. On the contrary, Wayne and Coleen have openly acknowledged the possibility of renewing their vows at a later date.
“Frankly, it feels like just yesterday that I tied the knot. Time flies! While it’s not on my mind presently, perhaps it’ll be a thought for the future. My parents have renewed their vows a couple of times; they’ve been happily married for over thirty years. It’s something I’ll contemplate down the line, but not just yet,” she shared in 2018.
