Bomb Disposal Unit Safely Detonates Explosive Device Recovered from Edinburgh Canal

In Edinburgh, a controlled explosion was conducted after an unidentified device was found in a canal.

Police in the capital were alerted around 10:05 am on Sunday regarding the discovery of a potential explosive object in the Union Canal, located in the Wester Hailes area of the city.

A cordon was established in the vicinity, and Harrison Road, spanning from Polwarth Terrace to West Bryson Road, was temporarily closed as a precautionary measure.

The item was transported to Cramond Beach, situated in the northwestern part of the city, for secure detonation by trained explosive ordnance disposal personnel.

On the foreshore at Cramond, a bomb disposal team was at work, and at approximately 1:46 pm, a loud detonation was heard.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland stated: “At around 10:05 am on Sunday, October 15, a report was received by the police regarding the retrieval of an explosive item from a canal on Harrison Road, Wester Hailes, Edinburgh.

“As a precaution, a cordon was established around the area, and Harrison Road, between Polwarth Terrace and West Bryson Road, was temporarily closed.

“The Explosive Ordnance Disposal team attended, and the item was taken to Cramond Beach for a secure detonation. Officers have now been stood down from both locations, and Harrison Road has been reopened.”
