Renowned presenter of The Great Australian Bake Off, Cal Wilson, has passed away, as confirmed by her family.

Having resided in Australia since 2003, the 53-year-old was a prominent figure in the comedy scene of the Commonwealth country for two decades. Throughout her illustrious career, she graced the stage at Melbourne’s International Comedy Festival an impressive 14 times and even boasted her own Netflix special.

In addition to her solo endeavours, she generously supported fellow comedians, including Rebel Wilson, in their creative pursuits. Unfortunately, while hosting Bake Off, Cal was hospitalized during the show’s production.

Her management released a statement revealing that she was “surrounded by family and friends after a short illness at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney.” They expressed, “Vale Cal Wilson. “Cal was cherished by her family, friends, fans, and colleagues, and a profound void now looms in the heart of our community,” stated close friend and comedian Damian Callinan in an interview with ABC Statewide Drive Victoria. He went on to explain that Cal and her family were unaware of her condition until it was too late. He conveyed, “It was a brief yet enigmatic illness. They were in the dark about its nature until it was essentially too late.” He expressed his gratitude at being among those who bid their final farewell to Cal.

Foxtel expressed their devastation at the loss, stating, “We are all utterly heartbroken to bid farewell to such an incredible, vibrant individual. Cal joined our Bake Off cast last year and immediately infused the show with her distinct sparkle. Her dedication, professionalism, and genuinely heartwarming humour endeared her to both the cast and crew, as well as the Australian audience. We will all miss her greatly, and our thoughts are with her family and friends.”

Friend and judge on The Great Australian Bake Off, Darren Purchase, recalled Cal being “extremely unwell” during their last meeting. He lamented, “I deeply regret that this has befallen such a wonderful person. I can’t shake the memory of the last time I saw her, when she was very ill. I wish I could embrace her and convey just how much she means to me and so many others.” Since news of her passing emerged, celebrities have taken to social media to express their condolences.

Australian actress Rebel Wilson wrote, “This is a truly tragic loss, and my heart goes out to Cal’s family. I was incredibly fortunate to collaborate with Cal on multiple projects, particularly over the past few years where she crafted brilliant material for me. She was extraordinarily gifted and exceptionally kind.” Grant Denyer added, “Oh my goodness. I’m shaken. I can hardly believe what I’m reading. How unbelievably sad. The most gentle, kind, generous, and talented performer I’ve ever had the pleasure to work alongside. This is devastating. My heart aches for her family. Love you Cal… thank you for everything. You are truly special. Xox.”
